    Arrgh... No team score!

Great job LV! Always tough. I saw a Whitehall guy the other night and when I asked if he thought they could win the MSL, his answer was immediately, "Not if LV shows up. They're very good."

    Turns out he was right.

Congrats to LV on their 4th MSL Title but somebody should check their stats. Straight from Whitehall was the only true 4 time MSL champ. Parsons lost to Heim in the 08-09 season and Heim from Heath was the MSL champ that year. Shame the MVW was probably awarded on a bad stat....

Sorry Cruiser - I was taking pics and didn't get the points down yesterday. The points are in the Advocate Article (LV had 258 and Whitehall had 190.5):

    http://www.newarkadvocate.com/article/20120212/SPORTS/202120329/Valley-pins-down-fourth-consecutive-MSL-Ohio-wrestling-title

Dad 15 -Did Parsons lose to Heim from Heath in an actual MSL-Ohio Dual/Tri in 08-09? Or in the County Tournament or some other tournament that season? In past years the MSL championship was settled in Duals and Tris and this year it was decided in one tournament - perhaps Parsons is undefeated in MSL-Ohio Duals/Tris but lost to Heim in a different tounament?

Actually, I can check the stats (because I've been the stat girl for 4 years now) and Parsons lost to Heim at the Licking County Tournament that season. In the actual league duals (which is how the standings are decided) Parsons beat him in a very close match.

Actually, I attended the 08-09 MSL dinner and have the awards dinner results program. Verbatim from the program:

    Wrestling Ohio Division
    League champions: Licking Valley
    Championship coach: Jeremy Tate
Wrestler of the Year: Aaron Shook Newark Catholic
    All League First Team:

103 JD Niese Senior Newark Catholic
    112 Kevin Heim Junior Heath
    119 Dillon Bright Junior Granville
    125 Dom Barlow Sophomore Heath
    130 Matt Straight Freshman Whitehall
    135 Alex Strayer Junior Lakewood
140 Jordan Harble Junior Licking Valley
145 Jake Nelson Junior Newark Catholic
    152 Brendan Leal Senior Whitehall
    160 Travers Clark Sophmore Whitehall
    171 Kirk Willis Sophomore Granville
    189 Aaron Shook Newark Catholic
215 Lane Hartfield Senior Newark Catholic
    Colin Bomprezzi Senior Granville

Note: Matt Straight is the only freshman listed as MSL all league first team for the 08-09 season, hence he can be the only 4 time winner this year.

I'd have to agree with lvstat - being MSL all-league first team is not the same. I mean no disrespect to Heim - he did beat Parsons in the Licking County Tourney, and when Parsons won this year's Licking County Tourney he wasn't announced as a 4 time winner because of that - Price from Licking Heights was and took MVW honors as well.

Just as the MSL championship is decided in the duals/tris in the past so should are the individual champions decided. The tournament yesterday simply took the place of having all of the duals/tris that would have normally taken place on Thursday nights throughout January and February. Parsons was undefeated in MSL-Ohio duals/tris for the 3 years those duals/tris decided the MSL Championship and he went undefeated in yesterday's MSL Tourney so he is a true 4 time champion. Plus the MVW is voted on by all the coaches - they could have voted for whomever they wanted - 4 time champ or not.

    - Not to take anything away from Straight either - a great wrestler and a great kid - always smiling and getting along with everyone regardless of what color singlet they are wearing! Congrats to Matt as well!!

Can we get the final results?

In order to get invited to the MSL Awards dinner, you must have the best record in the league for your weight class for that year. Prior to this year, that honor was determined thru the league duals and/or tri-meets. The wrestler in each weight class with the most wins in the league, gets the invite and is the MSL champ for that year. And yes, MSL All League First Team and MSL League Champion mean the exact same thing. If two wrestlers have the same record, they are co-champions as evidenced by the two boys listed above as the 215 lb champs during the 08-09 season. The Licking County Tournament and/or any other season tournaments have nothing to do with the MSL league champion determination. Having attended the MSL League banquet for the last 3 years, I know how the champions are determined and who has earned the title during the past three years.

Once again, I stand by my original point, Matt Straight from Whitehall is the only current wrestler that is an MSL League champ for 4 consecutive years and Kevin Heim from Heath was the MSL League champ for the 112 weight class for the 08-09 season. I believe during the season in question, Heim did beat Parsons in their head to head 112lb. league match up or else Parsons lost to someone else in the league that year. I think you are confusing this season with the following 09-10 season when Parsons did beat Heim and was named the MSL league champ for his sophomore year. Thus, making him a 3-time MSL champ.

Not to take anything away from Parsons either - he is a great wrestler and he too is a great kid. Wishing him well in the post season.

On the MVW award - agreed that the coaches can vote on whoever they want. Always wondering if they are awarding on the current day's performance or an overall career performance. Recent awards at the county and yesterdays MSL meet would signal coaches are leaning toward career accolades. Maybe a four time award should be given when earned, along with a true MVW award for performance in the current day's tournament. Sure saw some gutsy performances by some of the younger LV Wrestlers who weren't predicted to win yesterday. At any rate, wishing all the local teams well next week at sectionals!

Agreed - and I can tell you - she's the best there is - If there was an "All MSL Stat-Girl" award, she'd get my vote!

Anyone on here able to check those stats? Like a league official or something. Im just curious now lol

If dad15 is correct in reporting that Heim was listed on the MSL program, then I'd tend to go that way. Only league champs are invited to attend the dinner.

Who really cares its only the MSL it dosent mean asfk? If your a four state placer maybe worth fighting about.Didnt Strait get thrown out at districts last year for thoughing a fit after losing...
  • Go4alOngbOmB
12 top 4's out of 14 weight classes will do it for ya every time. Well done Mr. Tate and the Valley Wrestling squad.

Lets see some names added to some record books for state meets next!

Has that ever been done before? Maybe in the Northeast ie. 5th at R.I. as a Freshman, 4th at Mass. as A Soph, 2nd at Vermont as a Junior and 3rd at Maine as a Senior. ;)

That's what I was thinking. He is the only freshman listed on the program as champ and that would have been parsons freshman year as well. They're both good wrestlers and good kids.

    * I think it was a little uncalled for and a jab at the kid by bringing up last year district and trying to degrade him, but hey its every man's opinion. *

Dropthe topic it is sectional time. It was voted by coaches and they voted for the MVW in the MSL this year and they picked Jose Parsons. and the truth being told Matt Straight was third in the vote

The question is, was Jose parsons a 4 time msl champ or not because his name was not listed on the dinner program for that year. I have no horse in this race, I'm just curious now lol.

Actually - I only started this thread to say Congrats to the LV Kids and Coaches - that was the topic. I gave my opinion on what they meant when they said Jose was a 4 time champion Saturday- others disagreed -

I could understand if they call Jose a 4 time MSL champ at this year's dinner, but when they said he was a four time champ at last Saturday's Tourney I took it to mean that since the tourney this year was just to replace all the MSL-Ohio duals and tris in the past and he was undefeated in those as well as Last Saturday's tourney he was a 4 time MSL Tourney champ - as if they'd had the tourney 4 years in a row. So I agree to disagree. I'm dropping it now - hoping someone will post the Licking Heights Sectional Seeds tonight so we can discuss that!

But ya'll can rant on if you want- that's what the OC is for.

Why would you take a verbal jab at a young man who treats every wrestler the same Matt is a great kid and if ude like maybe you should rethink to what happen the blow up was not because he lost it was because he got upset bout a stalling call to which then the ref kept circling him bc he was mad and honestly kept pushing the issue as a ref u are taught to warn the kid then get back to wrestling if the issue persist you give q point take team points then if it still goes dq from match. The ref was in the wrong but then a issue with the crowd ( family) got thrown out bc of it n Matt got upset n got out of line n tossed from the tournament. My advice to you grow up these kids work hard extremely hard so if they showed no emotion I would be shocked

To lv congrats on the league title n getting kids to state especially congrats to Jose district champion
