    Hoover D2 Rankings 1-11-12

Here is the 2nd installment of these rankings. Coventry looks like their team is getting ready for the post season, with quite a few weight drops.

I have just landed a couple jobs with time restraints and they will affect my doing the other sectionals. I'm working on W Branch and Walsh, but I have to work, eat and sleep sometime. Looks like I will probably miss the Top Gun completely, but hopefully can make the Dies or Hephner.

Here is a quick rundown of the weights.

    106
1-Chell (SVSM) 2-Fagan (Coventry) 3-Scruggs/Williams (Buchtel) 4-Ritzman (Norton) 5-Davis (Fairless) 6-Grant (Hoban) also Johnson (Canton S) Norman (Kenmore)

I see that Fagan has dropped from 113. I almost put him in the top spot but stuck with Chell. This would be a good bout. Chell went 2-2 at Brecksville and had a decent weekend in Lake Catholic. Taton has majored him 3 times this season. The last tidbit is just to let you know how this weight stands vs another Alliance sectional. After these two, I see a lot of parity. Scruggs wrestled for Buchtel at the Canton City Tournament and took 3rd. Davis took 2nd at Fairless while Grant placed 4th at Chippewa (losing twice to Coventry's very capable Drake Skipper). Ritzman owns a win by fall over Grant early in the season.

    113
    1-Schoeppner (Canton S) 2-Shields (Coventry) 3-Huber (Hoban) 4-Cox (Buchtel) 5-Woods (Kenmore)

I know I'm missing some of the lower tier guys here, but I have to go on the results I have. Schoeppner is a no-brainer. In recent action, he took 1st at the Stitchco Tournament (while also getting MVW). Shields is another Coventry grappler who has dropped a weight. After being injured early in the season, I see that Huber has returned and placed 3rd at Chippewa. After these three, who knows?

    120
    1-Gunter (Coventry) 2-Rix (SVSM) 3-Catlett (Canton S) 4-White (Buchtel) 5-McGough (Hoban) 6-Morrison/Waddle (NW) also Lee (Fairless) Ballinger/Stuteville (Kenmore)

Most will think I am crazy, ranking a kid who has never been to Columbus over a returning state champion, but that is how I see it right now. While Mike Rix has been placing in some very tough tournaments, (6th at Brecksville, recently) he has struggled with the adjustment of jumping up 2 weight classes. Gunter has been on the verge of Columbus qualification 3 times. The district tournament just seems to have his number. I think (and hope) that it will change this season. Catlett remains a solid #3 here. He did lose 9-3 to the super tough freshman from Alliance 9-3 in a dual lately. As with most weights, I have the favorites and then my best guesses (at this time). Same at this weight. McGough did finish 6th at Chippewa. As far as the NW wrestlers, I have heard Waddle is out with a season ending injury. Lee owns an early season 11-7 win over Ballinger.

    126
1-Gibson (SVSM) 2-Hamm (Triway) 3-Smith (Norton) 4-D Herron (Canton S) 5-Rowe (Fairless) 6-Lake (Coventry) also Strobelt-McCann (Buchtel) Swaney (Hoban) Parle (Kenmore)

Gibson is a solid #1 here in a pretty stacked weight..Hamm, Smith, Herron and Rowe are all tough wrestlers with good previous results. Gibson didn't place at Brecksville. He is still the favorite. Hamm didn't wrestle at Medina. Herron finished 2nd at Stitchco while Rowe placed the same at Fairless and Canton City.. Lake is down from 132 and defaulted out of the Chippewa Tournament after winning his 1st match. He also beat Strobelt-McCann 8-7 in a dual. Swaney placed 3rd at Chippewa and McCann 3rd at the Canton City Tournament.

    132
    1-Skonieczny (SVSM) 2-Cropper (Coventry) 3-Smith (NW) 4-Casperd (Fairless) 5-Dolph/Harper (Canton S) 6-Kiner (Triway) also Williamson/Harvey (Kenmore) Whatley (Buchtel)

Skonieczny remains #1 here. He took 7th at Brecksville. There have been a couple bumps in the road (unexpected loss to Lake's DeGroff) but that is the nature of this sport. Cropper has dropped from 138. He is the returning sectional 135 champ NW results have been hard to come by lately (that will change next week at the Dies).Casperd placed 3rd at Canton City (by fall over Whatley) and 1st at Fairless, while Harper took 2nd at Canton.

    138
    1-Harris (NW) 2-Hartley (Coventry) 3-Harris (Canton S) 4-Veal (Akron N) 5-Chu (SVSM) 6-Fletcher (Triway) also Lyons/Harvey (Kenmore) King (Fairless) Farmer (Norton)

Harris from NW has been looking fairly tough lately. He did go 5-0 at Meadowbrook with all wins by fall and won the MVW award. Hartley seems to have moved into this spot for the Comets. He is coming off a 1st place performance at Chippewa, beating Veal 3-1 in the final.Harris (Canton S) took third at the Stitchco event recently. I was going to rank Chu in the previous ranking, but had to see a few more results. I may be under ranking King. He placed 2nd at Fairless and has beaten Harvey this season. Norton results have been hard to come by lately.

    145
    1-Belknap (Hoban) 2-Shephard (Fairless) 3-Sovocool (SVSM) 4-Easton (Kenmore) 5-Causman (NW) 6-Pavlich/Morgan (Coventry) also J Herron (Canton S)

Belknap continues to cruise this season, finishing 1st at Chippewa. Shephard also was a champion last week, finishing 1st at Fairless and Canton City. Sovocool was at 152 in the last rankings, but wrestled this weight last weekend at Lake Catholic. While the results weren't the best, his 3rd at Solon is still on my mind. Causman may or may not be the 145 in the end for NW, but his pin over Morgan gets him a 5 ranking. Pavlich has been out all season and if he regains the form I am used to seeing, he could be top 4 here.

From 152 thru 182, this sectional is going to struggle at Alliance. The top ranked wrestler or two should be OK, but I don't see a lot of depth at any of these weights. I'm struggling find names. I may be missing someone. If so please let me know!

    152
    1-Rang (Coventry) 2-King/Pawlyk (NW) 3-Schondel (Hoban) 4-Wilson (Buchtel) 5-Perkins/Overstreet (Kenmore)

I see that Sovocool and Heron have now competed at 145. Other than Rang, I am am searching for rankable wrestlers. Rang took 1st at Chippewa recently, but Pavlich wrestled the duals this week for Coventry, beating Wilson 17-5 in one match.

    160
    1-Mongold/Roberts (Coventry) 2-Ayers (NW) 3-Carr (Springfield) 4-Arnold (Fairless) 5-Dyer (Norton) 6-Simmons (Canton S) also McClellan (Kenmore)

Once again, Coventry wrestles more than one grappler at many weights and it is hard to really figure who is the top gun sometimes.. I have Mongold as the varsity grappler for the Comets and he has wrestled some duals of late, pinning Carr in one of them. Roberts wrestled at the Chippewa Tournament, placing first. NW results have been hard to get. Arnold placed 2nd at the Fairless Invite and 3rd at the Canton City Tournament (at 170). Simmons seems to have settled in here for Canton South.

    170
    1-Chenot (Coventry) 2-Miller (Akron N) 3-Willoughby (Kenmore) 4-Wilkes (Buchtel) 5-Edgell (Canton S) 6-Yakubowski (Hoban) also Hofer (Springfield)

I struggled with the top spot here. Miller is a returning DQ while Chenot was an alternate last season.Chenot has been wrestling mostly at 182 for Coventry, but I think he will be here in February. The same with Miller as most of his results that I have are at 182. Both placed at Chippewa last weekend. Miller 2nd at this weight and Chenot 3rd at 182. Their teams dualed this week, but Chenot was at 195 so a head to head match up did not happen. Yakubowski placed 5th at Chippewa.

    182
    1-Adkins (SVSM) 2-Rutherford (Norton) 3-Mays (Kenmore)

Adkins placed 7th at Brecksville over the holidays and wrestled well at the Jimmy Cook duals at Lake Catholic. Rutherford was beaten 2-1 in a dual recently by the very tough Groff (Sandy Valley). He is wrestling well and should be OK come post season tournaments.

    195
    1-Zody (Triway) 2-Headrick (Coventry) 3-Hunt (Canton S) 4-Yoder (Fairless) 5-Murgatroyd (NW) 6-Painter (Kenmore) also Buzzi (Hoban)

This is a very solid weight. The top 4 have all had good tournament results this season, although Zody is the only to travel to an upper echelon event (Medina). Yoder will be at the Top Gun. I'm curious to see how he does. Zody placed 5th at Medina, while Headrick was first at Chippewa while Hunt took second at Stitchco. Yoder was the Champion at Canton City and Fairless. Buzzi placed 4th at Chippewa.

    220
1-Stone (SVSM) 2-Vinson (Kenmore) 3-Wadkins (Triway) 4-Washington (Hoban) 5-Haramis (Norton) 6-Fry (Coventry) also Parsons (Canton S) Wellman (NW) Cooper/Neloms (Buchtel)

Stone hasn't returned to the mat since his injury at Ironman. Here's hoping he makes it back in time for sectionals. I don't have many results for Vinson, but what I do have are all victories. Wadkins didn't place at Medina but he had two 3-2 losses to tough opponents. Washington won the final at Chippewa by fall over Fry. The latter did have a win in their dual over Cooper. Parsons took 1st at the Canton City Tournament and 3rd at Stitchco.

    285
1-Hodge (Canton S) 2-Gosnell (Coventry) 3-Brumley (SVSM) 4-Cox (NW) 5-Fields (Kenmore) 6-Glas (Norton) also Harris (Buchtel) Wyant (Fairless) Shuler (Triway) Martter (Hoban)

This is also a very tough weight. I haven't changed the order since the 1st rankings, but I think any of the top 3 could be put at #1. Recently, Hodge finished third at Stitchco and Gosnell 3rd at Chippewa. His loss was to the very tough Srock of Chippewa 6-4. Brumley, as a freshman has had very good results at tough tournaments. He finished 7th at Brecksville. Harris placed 2nd at the Canton City Tournament, where Wyant took 3rd. Martter took 3rd at Chippewa at 220

Fairless is at Top Gun and SVSM at the Catholic Invitational this weekend. I'll scour those results and whatever else I get this weekend and do a very quick update early in the week. I'm going to hit the West Branch Sectional hard this week and can hopefully get something out before the weekend. If not, right after the Dies and Hephner results are recorded.

    Good Luck to all wrestlers!!

    Hoover D2 Rankings update 1-16-12

I think I have all the weekend results tabulated so here is a quick update, then back to Walsh and W Branch

Adkins, 14-13. 220: Headrick (C) injury default Baker, 3-0. 285: Fry (C) pin Rowland, 1:51.

These are the results I have from this dual. I have been questioned about dropping some Coventry wrestlers down in weight and that my information was incorrect. Does anyone know if these results are wrong?. I have checked and Dynowski is Boro's 120.

    103
1-Chell (SVSM) 2-Fagan (Coventry) 3-Scruggs/Williams (Buchtel) 4-Ritzman (Norton) 5-Davis (Fairless) 6-Grant (Hoban) also Johnson (Canton S) Norman (Kenmore)

No changes here. Shields wrestled 119 in the dual against Norton and lost to Beddow 4-0. Zupancic is now listed

    120
1-Rix (SVSM) 2-Gunter (Coventry) 3-Catlett (Canton S) 4-White (Buchtel) 5-Beddow (Norton) 6-McGough (Hoban) also Morrison (NW) Lee (Fairless) Ballinger/Stuteville (Kenmore)

I've moved Rix to the top here. He has wrestled a much tougher schedule than Gunter and is a returning state champ and 2X placer. He finished 2nd at the CIT this weekend.Gunter was at 126 and beat the very tough Hermann (Waterloo) 2-1. Beddow had a successful weekend, beating Coventry's Shields 4-0 and pinning Southeast's Smith.

    126
1-Gibson (SVSM) 2-Hamm (Triway) 3-Smith (Norton) 4-D Herron (Canton S) 5-Rowe (Fairless) 6-Lake (Coventry) also Strobelt-McCann (Buchtel) Swaney (Hoban) Parle (Kenmore)

No changes here. Gibson placed 5th at the CIT. Smith lost a close match to the very tough Hermann (Waterloo) 2-0 OT in a dual meet.

    132
    1-Skonieczny (SVSM) 2-Cropper (Coventry) 3-Smith (NW) 4-Casperd (Fairless) 5-Dolph/Harper (Canton S) 6-Kiner (Triway) also Lyons/Williamson/Harvey (Kenmore) Whatley (Buchtel)

No changes here. Skonieczny placed 3rd at the CIT. Cropper lost to Waterloo's JJ Diven 5-3 at 138.

    138
    1-Harris (NW) 2-Hartley (Coventry) 3-Harris (Canton S) 4-Veal (Akron N) 5-Chu (SVSM) 6-Fletcher (Triway) also Lyons/Harvey (Kenmore) King (Fairless) Farmer (Norton)

Shepard went 3-2 at the Top Gun tournament. One result that I noted was a 9-0 major dec over Streetsboro's Woods. The latter beat Pavlich in their dual 7-2. I think Pavlich remains here for Coventry.

    152
    1-Rang (Coventry) 2-King/Pawlyk (NW) 3-Schondel (Hoban) 4-Wilson (Buchtel) 5-Perkins/Overstreet (Kenmore)

    Rang beat Norton's Dyer 14-3 at 160.

    160
    1-Mongold (Coventry) 2-Ayers (NW) 3-Carr (Springfield) 4-Arnold (Fairless) 5-Dyer (Norton) 6-Simmons (Canton S) also McClellan/Parmer (Kenmore)

No changes. As stated in at 152, Dyer lost to Coventry's Rang 14-3 in a dual Saturday.

    170
    1-Miller (Akron N) 2-Chenot/Davis (Coventry) 3-Willoughby (Kenmore) 4-Wilkes (Buchtel) 5-Edgell (Canton S) 6-Yakubowski (Hoban) also Hofer (Springfield)

After looking through all the results again, I've moved Miller to #1. Chenot or Davis may be at 182 for the Comets. I'm ranking Chenot here and Davis up a weight.
