http://www.CardingtonWrestling.com. Who will be the top teams this year? Which wrestlers will make the All-Tournament Team?
Teams in this year's Pirate Holiday Duals:
1. Ayersville Pilots, Green Meadows Conference, Head Coach Bill Ondrus, Athletic Director Doug Johnston. The Pilots were seeded first in last year’s tournament but were upset in the first round by Garaway and ended up fifth. The year before, they finished third.
2. Bluffton Pirates, Northwest Conference, Head Coach Jeff Kleman, Athletic Director Alex Hanna. The Bluffton Pirates have competed in our tournament the last 5 years and have been runners-up twice, to Coshocton in 2006 and Milan in 2008.
3. Cardington-Lincoln Pirates, Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference, Head Coach Tony Watson, Athletic Director Brandon Dodrill. In the previous seven tournaments the host team has finished as high as second (in the first tournament) and twice have ended up in third place.
4. Coshocton Redskins, East Central Ohio League, Head Coach Brian Baughman, Athletic Director George Hemming. Coshocton is the only team besides Cardington who has been in the tournament every year since its beginning. The Redskins were third in the inaugural event and have been the tournament champions twice.
5. Garaway Pirates, Inter-Valley Conference, Head Coach Sedric Gerber, Athletic Director Jason Phillips. Last year the Garaway Pirates were underestimated by the coaches in the seeding meeting, upset top-seeded Ayersville in a Round 1 dual and went on to finish third.
6. Milan (Michigan) Big Reds, Huron League, Head Coach Clint Kraft, Athletic Director David Kaiser. The team from north of the border is the one everyone else loves to beat. In their four previous appearances in the tournament they have finished as champions twice, including last year when their championship dual against River Valley finished in a tie and the officials had to go down the list to the EIGHTH tie-breaker criterion (“The team having the greater number (total match points) of first-point(s) scored shall be declared the winner.”) in order to determine which team would get the championship trophy.
7. Newark Catholic Green Wave, Mid-State League, Head Coach Jason Boucher, Athletic Director Bill Franks. The Green Wave competed in this tournament once before, three years ago, when they won three of their five duals to finish sixth, losing a close fifth place match to the host Cardington Pirates.
8. Ridgewood Generals, Inter-Valley Conference, Head Coach Nate Carpenter, Athletic Director Alan Keesee. This is the second appearance in the tournament for the Generals, who hope to improve on last year’s 1-4 dual record.
9. River Valley Vikings, Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference, Head Coach Mark McGuire, Athletic Director Barry Dutt. They have competed in the tournament the five previous years, showing steady improvement each year, and they are losing only one starter to graduation from the team that finished second on a tie-breaker to Milan last year.
10. Thurgood Marshall Cougars, Dayton City League, head Coach Armiya Muhammed, who is also the athletic director. The Cougars competed in our tournament for the first time last year and found themselves outnumbered. They will have a few more wrestlers and a little more experience this year, including three of last year’s starters who were out of the line-up with injuries the day of our tournament.
11. Waterloo Vikings, Portage Trail Conference, Head Coach Brian Munger, Athletic Director John Herchek. This is Waterloo’s first year in the tournament. They have a returning state qualifier and four other returning district qualifiers.
12. Waynedale Golden Bears, Wayne County Athletic League, Head Coach Louie Stanley, Athletic Director Eric Riebe. The Golden Bears won this tournament in their only other appearance two years ago. The Beam brothers have graduated, but with five returning district qualifiers the Golden Bears are merely reloading.
