  That it is alot of real good underclassman coach stepped down he is also the track coach and did not have the time for both and he had his first child 2 days after state.

  Why such a large turnover in head coaching jobs....tough parents or not enough support from parents????

  A thousand different coaches will give you a thousand different reasons, sir. Most likely all legit, too.
  
  I caught a glimpse of my six year old out of the corner of my eye two days ago... when did he grow up!? Most likely, between November to February. That alone makes me rethink why I do what I do. As of today, I still have the passion.

  And you know, sometimes, some of these guys still have the passion, but on the priority scale of life, coaching is somewhere below family. And to me, that is when the decision can be agonizing.

  And from what I can tell Cruiser you are not a Nov-March person......but a Nov-Oct person.....and I am sure you have found out to make good teams and wrestlers it doesnt stop in March......making the entire issue even more difficult......Wrestling is so underrated when it comes to the work load off season......think about it...Basketball players or even Football players can out together a backyard game in seconds...wrestlers on the other hand have to plan out locations, who shows up, coaches on hand and it envolves so many people to make it work....
  
  I am not taking away from those sports...they work hard also.....just comparing them a little...

  ???? I don't think it's underrated at all!!!! Those that stand on the podium in Columbus know exactly the workload that it took to get there. Those that want to be there have a very good understanding of the year around commitment it takes. Some just aren't willing to do it.

  Most good coaches struggle with this. Agonizing is a very accurate word.

  Con...you misunderstood me....I said it was underrated....not overrated...The offseason is a must for kids who want to be standing at the end.....I am talking about the work load it takes to get there......wrestlers dont have the same opportunity to wake up in the morning and just go the field or court to play ball.....it takes a lot of other people such as coaches (Time and Passion) to do this. How many kids have a mat in thier back yard and partner that is at his level to practice with.....it more than a pick-up game.....its a way of life....

  Uhhh I think we are in agreement. I don't think the kids underrate the effort at all that it takes. It's year around and they know it.

  Biggest thing that makes coaching difficult, the time away from family. I wonder if there is a higher divorce rate among coaches, not just wrestling coaches. Just curious.

  My take, for what it is worth: Hard work, Work ethic, sportsmanship, and character are all things that are instilled in our athletes. These very same principals are more imortant for our own children to have. May sound selfish, but the second I find out that my wife is pregnant is the second I retire from a head coaching position. Not saying I won't help out in some way, but not in the capacity of head coach.

  My wife and I had our first child six years ago in October. I stuck it out for one particular kid's senior season and that was the last time I was paid to coach wrestling. I still volunteer and help out at different programs here and there, but I simply don't have the time to commit to a program full time. The sport demands more than I am willing to give. To be honest, I don't know how men with families do it. Every time one of these jobs opens up, I think how great it would be to take one over and put my personal stamp on a team (I've always been an assistant, never a Head Coach). I think about applying...and then I think about my little girl and I know it's just not possible for me.

  Its certainly tough to balance the time you need to put into building and maintaining a successful wrestling program, and also spending time with your family. I'm going into my 11th year as a head coach and and have daughters that will turn 13 & 11 soon, one of them special needs, so they've grown up with me coaching. I try to incorporate them into what I do as best I can... they travel overnight with us at times, help out at practice, etc. Hell my wrestlers have been their babysitters lol. Several times I have seriously thought about stepping down when the guilt gets to much but my "lil" girls are the first two to squash that idea. I realize its as much a part of their lives now in some aspects as it is mine.
  Having a supportive wife...at times lol...is a key also.
  Funny story...years ago when I was just a skinnier, younger asst, with alot more hair, I would see Dave Riggs out for a beer on a semi-regular basis and on of the funniest things he ever told me was "you are not a good coach until you've been divorced at least once because of the sport". Now I know he was joking ( a lil), but there was a semblence of truth as well in his statement. I think he was trying to tell me what to expect and the price you may have to pay. Luckily I trained my wife about me coaching before I married her (Please dont let her read this!)
  
  Kudos to all the coaches who have families who give any amount of time to this great sport!
