How can Jacob Spearman not be first team in the Ohio division? He has wins at 103 against Straughter and Houge. If you have to bump him to 112he was unbeaten in conference there too. Undefeated division 1 district champ is second team in his OCC division? Wrestler of the year, Jon Spires? Maybe Spearman was wrestler of the year, but 2nd team? What a joke.
  • cruiser_96
rassler: I think it has something to do with the number of matches wrestled at a certain weight. It may be all matches, it may just be more than half, or any number in between those two.

If Jacob was 4-0 at 103 and 3-0 at 112, it may have been 5 matches at a weight. I do not know how things went this year. I know you used to have to wrestle a certain number of matches at a weight.

I'm sure the answer to this is (somehow) is 2, 3 and 4. (<--- You know what I mean!?)

ps: 2, 3 and 4 SURE would explain how Spires was Wrestler of the year!!!!!!!! :D

Question on 171....Waldrop of Newark beat Lancaster and Pick North by pin.....Hoover forfeited majority of OCC duals and finished at 160 weight class... How does Waldrop not get 2nd team.....only losing to Hughes 8 to 7 in dual meet

He has the second best record at the 171 OCC-Ohio division....
  • Cthelites
Wouldnt it be nice to have a tourney!
  • wildcats1984
Last one I remember was three seasons ago held at Gahanna.....it clearly showed who was who.....
  • hammer43065
WOW! Cardinal Division---Snyder, Thomas, Kaczkowski(145, 152, 160 from Liberty) all w/30+ wins, all Sectional champs, all SQ, 1 District champion, 2 District runners up-not on any team? Kaczkowski placed 8th at state??????????????? Who picks these?
  • bpetereit
hammer, this is strictly OCC. you had to have at least 4 matches at a weight class. according to the coach, the kids didn't have enough matches at a certain weight class. hope this helps
  • wildcats1984
Thanks for all the information people are suppling but I am still trying to figure out the 171 weight class...Newarks's Waldrop wrestled 44 matches at 171 and one at 189....he pinned the Lancaster and the Pick North kid in duals......lost to hughes Grove City Hughes 8 to 7....and Reynoldsburg Hoover had to forfeit I though two duals due to injurys....one to Gahanna and one to Grove City and he was pinned by Lancaster kid....

With this all said why would Waldrop not get 2nd team......he also finshed better at sectionals then all three of these kids...plus had the second best record for OCC Ohio Div

Who needs an email sent to get this explained to me.....thanks for all the help

That would make too much sense to be feasible....................

4 matches IN THE OCC duals... just to clarify. (A kid could wrestle 40 matches. But if he did not wrestle 4 matches in one weight class in the OCC duals, not of it matters.)

    Newark 171: Waldrop

vs. Lancaster: WIN by fall (You also have that he was pinned by Lancaster)
    vs. Groveport: WIN by FF
vs. Pick. Central: WIN by fall
vs. Pick. North: WIN by fall
    vs. Gahanna: WIN
vs. Grove City: LOSS dec. 8-7
    vs. Reynoldsburg: LOSS

Currently, I have him at 5-2, perhaps even 4-3. Is this right so far???

ps: When your coach went to the meeting, did he have the same information as you?

And to clarify, I did NOT attend this meeting. Just trying to figure things out much like you.
  • wildcats1984
Information is correct....he went 5 and 2......do you know what the other kids went...
  • cruiser_96
I have no idea what the other kids went.

It may have come down to a coaches vote????? Not sure how the Newark coach didn't speak up on that one, seeing that the kid is 5-2 though.
  • wildcats1984
Info is off by one....He beat the Gahanna kid and lost to Reynoldsburg but record is correct.....
  • Mutt cuts
Hoover went 4-1, but never weighed in at 160 for any of the duals. I believe based on last year that the cut off was four matches. Thats why Spearman didn't get first team at 103, and when Lancaster wrestled Reynoldsburg that was one of the times that he dropped down. Chang from Reynoldsburg went 6-0 at 112, and 1-0 at 119. Hence the voting went down as such, and I don't beleive the Lancaster coach was present for the meeting. I'm sure in the realm of things half of these kids could really care less about this. Here are Hoovers league results.
    GC: DNW
    GAH: DNW
    PC: won by pin
    PN: won by pin
NEW: beat Newark kid head to head
    GP: won by FF
LAN: wrestled at 171, Bond bumped up to wrestle him and won by a point or two.
  • wildcats1984
Thanks for all the info.....I understand but dont agree 100%....if a kid cannot wrestle in an OCC meet then it should be a loss.....if a Basketball/Football team doesnt show up for a game then they get credited a a loss....

But again thanks to everyone for all the info....

Thanks BJ! That explains it. I know they wrestled up several conference duals and had to sit out due to illness and schedule problems. I second the motion for a tournament though!

Spearman went 2-0 at 103 and 5-0 at 112. He meets the 4 match minimum at 112. So we have a state placer, district champ and section champ still on the second team? Spearman was the Ohio division's only district champ and only state placer. What could the coaches possibly be thinking on that vote? We need a tournament..........

Yeah, then we dont have to worry about anyone bumping up for the better of the team and costing a kid like that to be recognized. In the grand scheme of things Im sure he would prioritize them as state district then league(would sectional be ahead of league?), but still he earned that right to be honored by the league and didnt get it.
Why do coaches put more emphasis on league duals if things like this get diminished.
Teams shoot to be league champions why shouldnt the kids?
Are we the only league/conference that doesnt have a tourney?

All right more on my soap box lol.
The biggest conference in the state without a conference or even a league tourney?
Im from the Valley and I look at how cherished the OVAC tourney is.
Couldnt we build something like that here?
I know my son's present and former coaches are against it and they have given compelling arguments against.
The main thing besides the season points is they say we already have an OCC tourney at the end of the season called the District.
Are there many of the same kids there? Absolutely!
But lets look at who isnt.
Dayton! They continue to send their best here and I dont see that changing next yr or any time soon.
You also have the Teays kids and St Chucks and a few others including City League.
You also are missing arguably the top team in Olentangy and other top D2 teams that would add greatly to a tourney.
Could this be one of the many reasons Cent Oh is way behind others in the state? Not having a meaningful league/conference tourney?
I would think that kids would regard a league/conference tourney as a high level tourney. One that they would really want to win. Maybe that would get them more mentally prepared for the post season? And no disrespect to any of those schools that host good tourneys, but dont you think kids would be more pumped for a league/conference tourney than say a Cruiser Invite or Bradley Porter Memorial (I only use these 2 as these are tourneys we went to and both are great by the way, just saying)
You still keep your league duals. You could even add one more super tri to help with the points if you want.

Could this create some buzz for Central Oh wrestling? Maybe. Judging by the paltry support we get from the Dispose, anything would help.
Did any of these All OCC teams make that rag? I know they didnt last yr in fact there wasnt even anything posted on these type of forums last yr.
The only reason I found out my son made All OCC last yr was because he got his award at our team banquet. SAD!
At least having a tourney COULD create some buzz.

I know I dont know all the intricacies to put something on like this, but I would think it would be doable.
2 day 32 man bracket! Sweet!
Or 4 satellite 8 team league tourneys taking the top 3 to the conference championship! Even sweeter!(not sure if thats allowable under OHSAA though but sounds sweet!)
Where? I heard Orange has a huge gym? Convention Center?

    Just my 2 cents!
OK let me have it from the naysayers lol!
  • iGranby
Bummer for syfers (RB), beat the 2nd team 140lber in an occ match, guess he didnt wrestle enough occ matches at 140? i know we saw him for the first quarter(ish) of the season at 145
  • Mutt cuts
    wildcat,
If a wrestler does not weigh-in why should we consider that a loss? Losses are and should be determined by actual competition on the mat. Andrew Howe missed a good chunk of the season for Wisconsin including several big ten duals. Should all of those missed matches count against him?
