5:00 Consolations for post-season?? Yea or nay?
-
Dad4SportsI just wanted to throw it out there.....it's always been a pet peeve of mine. I have never been able to understand why the OHSAA uses 5:00 matches in the post-season? A match is 6:00.....why penalize the wrestler who is in superior condition by shortening the match by 17%? Are we in that much of a hurry to get home that we need to speed things up?
With so much at stake, why not let the kids wrestle a true match?
I'll get off my soap box.....am I in the minority? -
cruiser_965 minutes vs. 6 minutes. We had this discussion about two or three years ago... we are unsure when or why it started. I will say this, if follow-your-man is the alternative, I'll take what we have now!
-
GmanDad I'm with you. Kids that are in shape with the stamina can and will wear down others it makes a difference.
-
squeekI agree with 6 minutes for post season.
League and State -
Jmar25Win and you won't have to worry. I will say this though... The minute less should force more action... This isn't the case usually... But wrestling is so defensive these days that I don't think conditioning is as big a factor with say districts/states level kids.

cruiser_96Back to my original question... Why is that way? When did it begin.
Yea or nay? I say Yay for the reason that the dynamics have changed. A clear distinction has been made in more than one way now. There is a sense of urgency more so than in the championship side of things. Granted, the championship bracket has its share of must-win, but it is heightened in the consolation bracket. What better way than to squeeze the clock just a bit? Again, I don't mind 1-2-2 in the consolation. -
6 minutesmatch to go to the next week should be 6 minutes.....the rest of consi's should be 5
-
Fab1bI prefer the consi matches 5 mins. As an official it just speeds things up and creates a greater sense of urgency on the wrestler's part IMO.
-
Con_AlmaI don't have a problem with 5 minutes. I like the last match completed being the championship match. This often times aids in that happening.
-
Coach HennosyFab1b ... if this sense of urgency is so important ... why not have it through out?
Con_Alma ... more often than not, this is because of the more evenly match opponents, not time.
All post season matches should be 6. -

I can't answer that, I don't know. -

It may be more often than not. My comment was that it often times aides in the consolation match ending first.
Whether these matches should or should not be 6 minutes is subjective and not everyone agrees that they should be 6. -

I believe it was to simply speed up tournaments. I agree with the OP though, the post season should be all 6 minutes. There are some damn good wrestlers who might have to wrestle in the conso at districts. I never thought it was fair for those guys to decide who goes to state in 5 minutes. You can say "don't lose" but only two guys make it through a tourney without wrestling the 5 minute match. -
cruiser_96It's like this and like that and like this, y'all!!!
6 minutes in the championship, 5 minutes in the consolation = +1 -
Dad4SportsI just have a picture in my mind of the numerous 6 minute matches that I can see where superior conditioning made the difference in the last minute....
A match lasts 6 minutes......during the season it's not a big deal to go to 5 in the consis. But when it's all for keeps, IMO 6 minutes should be what is used... -
Bitterrunner-upA high school wrestling match is six minutes, period. Think about how many low-level duals are contested at six minutes. Heck, JV matches are six minutes, but a match as high level as the 3th/4th place match at The State Tournament is five minutes? It just doesn't make sense. And someone mentioned that the five minute time period helps the wrestlers gain some sense of urgency. Really? If you're in the consolation bracket of the post season, and you don't already have a sense of urgency, then no difference in the time will help you.
Single Division, 32-man double elimination bracket, top eight All-Ohio, six minute consolations. -

Ahhh, I see we've added on to the mantra! -
ohiowrestlingchampAnother thing is alot of times the wrestlers dont realize or dont know they only get a one minute first period because they are not told which can sometime throw a wrestler off

Huh, this has been rule for a long time. Consi matches in tournaments are 5 mins in length. -
wooref1126I say let the kids wrestle the full 6.
-
Cthelites6!!!

1_beast6 minutes.....maybe even make the Championships 7 min ; - ) So they last longer.
I can tell you a great example...my JR year, if it was a 6 minute match, i may not have made the show. I was riding the hips and was high...my opponent was shaking me and I was only up 1, as time expired...i fell off his head. 5 min and 30 secs may have did me in. -

The third period is only 2 minutes though, just like any third period. So your example doesn't really work. -
