  Coming down with a dang cold and have to ref Regionals this weekend (same as Ohio Districts), guess its better to be sick this weekend then for state next weekend!

  To answer the thread, I have reffed youth tourneys before. I do eventually want to get into reffing.

  You're just setting it up so you have an excuse for all the blown calls you make and for when you're out of position to call a falll or award back points!

  Does a kid that specializes in cradles have a disadvantage? I don't want to show my total ignorance, I have only been following wrestling for 4 years but it seems to me the cradle kids have to keep a kid down for an extra four seconds to allow the ref to get down on the mat? This is only in youth I have noticed this, but some big time tourneys. SO does it get better in high school?

  I don't understand the situation you're describing. Are you saying that it takes the official more time to get down and count for back points with a cradler than it does for other turns?

  I remember when I first reffed. I was so excited and wanted to do such a good job that I ran myself ragged halfway through the match trying to always be in the 'perfect' position. It took me that long to learn a) there is no perfect position to be in all the time and b) wait a second or two and the wrong position becomes the right position.
  
  Seriously, I reffed for 3 years and quit because I couldn't take getting booed (maybe I was a bad ref?). I just didn't find enjoyment out of people that don't know you or the sport, booing you..AND..coaches screaming and trying to intimidate you. I couldn't separate the feelings of 'this is just a sport' from the 'I'd really like to put this loud mouth in his place and drop him where he stands".

  It's a thankless job and there is no doubt about that! You will never make everyone in the gym happy! No matter how right you were, someone will think you were wrong. Refs are the scapegoat for little Johnny when he gets beat! I just do my job and go home, if people want to boo, then boo. You will be surprised at how most do not know the rules, however they surely think they do. Pick up a rule book sometime, you'll actually be surprised with how much you actually didn't know!!

  I officiated for 5 years during the late 90's. I had to get out of it because of the hours I started working. I enjoyed it very much.

  I will be calling the FHSAA State Championships this weekend in Lakeland, Fl. My 3rd such selection over the past 4 seasons, looking forward to it. I think this years Florida State Tourny will be the toughest it has been in years.

  Congrats. It must be fun to be selected as a state official. It's crazy how the Florida State tourney is this weekend, while the post season in Ohio is just beginning.

  There are certainly are refs that don't know the rules, I have to deal with them!
  
  Thanks it is quite an honor. Yeah Fl season starts way to early IMO!
