Split Campuses at HS --- good or bad?

  • knightflyer150
Not sure if this is even wrestling related, but lets make it so.

I just saw Reynoldsburg is opening another high school campus, but keeping one school identity. This, of course, means only one set of sports teams. I know Canton Glenoak used to...and probably still does...maintain two separate campuses, one on Schneider road and one near 44th.

So, what is the better model? The traditional central ohio model of breaking out more schools...or adding campuses?

Not a loaded question...really just curious.

    Hmm, I have no idea.

My guess is that they could make it work. And do so for a while. Eventually, IMO, one part of town will gain a sense of superiority, and want to break off. Again, JMO.

Cruiser - The schools won't be split geographically - students will attend one or the other based on their academic interests.

Maybe I'm missing something here, which is possible, and seeing that you should know more about it than I do I'll defer to your knowledge, but, allow me to ask, doesn't two campuses imply two different geographical locations???

I know the area pretty well... do they proposed sites???

Wait...wait...wait a damn minute. You mean something is being done with academic interests as the driving force? Crazy talk. Crazy talk, I tell you. ;)

    Sounds interesting and innovative.

    Ha! Good one KF175.

Will it still be one team with one practice?

Yeah, I was under the impression the campuses were (significantly) split geographically. As long as the athletes are able to practice together and have an opportunity to interact outside of practice I don't see how this would differ than any other "standard" school.

It all depends on how you view high school sports. If you're think it's all about participation and giving the most kids the opportunity to make the squad, then the Central Ohio split-school model is the way to go. If you're about winning and fielding the best possible teams, then keeping the rosters intact yeilds better results. How good would a team be that combined all three Hilliards or all three Olentangies or the four South-Western City schools? But, how many good kids and good athletes would lose their opportunity to participate if programs were combined?

And that, my good man, is the dicotomy.

Actually, to answer your previous question, it is my understanding that the split will be academically oriented, not geographic. So, you could live right next to someone who goes to the other school, because you have different interests academically.

Yes, but where will the two schools be located!?!?!?! Obviously the one on Livingston Road is staying... that is, unless your engineering dept. is AMAZINGLY superior to all other humans and plan to physically relocated that building all in one move. And the other will be located??????????? What, east of the Wal-Mart? Maybe north-east of the Wal-Mart?

It appears that the 2nd high school will be on Summit Rd., so, northeast of the first school. Reynoldsburg is supposed to implement a K-12 STEM program, which will be at that location.

    So...two schools...1 team....INTERESTING to say the least!

I think there could be a reduction in cost since the schools could now let go of coaches, support staff, and other positions that they could eliminate one position in. So instead of two high school wrestling coaches, you'd have one.
