NCAA D-1 Predictions
-
like_thatThe season is going to be starting here pretty soon. Who are your favorites?
125: McDonough (IOWA). I know Steiber is great, but this weight class is tough. I think Robles (ASU) or Precin (Northwestern) could pull away with the upset
133:Boris Novachkov (Cal Poly). This weight class doesn't seem to have the depth.
141: Kellen Russell (Michigan). Would like to see Germaine Lindsey (OU) find his way in the finals and win it though.
149: Darrion Caldwell (NC State): Collision course between Caldwell and Dake (Cornell). I think Dake will be shocked once he wrestles Caldwell's style.
157: Seems like a wide open weight class. I will just go with Colt Sponseller (OSU), but i can easily see 4-5 other guys winning it.
165: Andrew Howe (Wisconsin). I have Howe as the early favorite. We will see how Burroughs (Nebraska) adjusts to the weight jump, and see if he is 100% recovered. If he is back to what he was 2 years ago, then watch out.
174: Chris Henrich (UVA): Should have been in the finals last year.
184: Quentin Wright (PSU)
197: Cam Simaz (Cornell)
HWT: Dom Bradley (Missouri) -

cruiser_96157: I just don't see it, coach.
Is the darkhorse a darkhorse to AA, place high or win it?
Other than bitter's 157, I like both. It's just so hard to predict a) this early and b) college wrestling. -
Bitterrunner-upCruiser...When I put in the "Dark horse", I was thinking dark horse to win it. That's why I don't have one for 125, 149 and 165. For those weights, there's no one I didn't list that I could see winning the title. There's always "dark horse" AAs (Triggas last year).
At 125, I think Stieber will have wins over the top guys, including McDonough. I just think Precin is a little better right now. 133 is a bit of a reach, but the weight class isn't super loaded, and Grajales is as talented a freshman as you'll see. 141, Kennedy is a favorite of mine for a while now. Russell could absolutey win though. 149 is a three man race and 165 is a two man race with Miller a guy who could possibly pull an upset. The problem with Miller winning it all, is he'll have to beat both Howe AND Burroughs at the NCAAs. I like Miller a lot, and he's a gamer, but I just don't see it. 174 is a likely two man contest between Mack Lewnes and Chris Henrich. At '84 Chris Perry is the next big thing. I love Kirk Smith, but I think Perry will win in pretty straight forward fashion. I also like Honeycutt, but Perry is just that good. I'm really interested to see what Kilgore looks like at 197. He could win it with his combination of strength and speed for a big man. I can never pick heavyweight, but I like Trice and I think Gelogaev's stuff will translate well to 285.
As far as 157, do you not think Taylor can win it, or do you take issue with Fittery, Hall and Jason Welch? -
superstud152what weight is bubba jenkins going this yr whatever it is may have to watch out for him
-
cruiser_96David Taylor... I just can't see him winning it. And YOU, of all people, know of my David Taylor love affair/(border line) restraining order man-crush. Not to mention... I heart Colt. As well as Jason Welch being awesome.
I L-O-V-E BigTen wrestling!!!!!!
Jenkins = 149 or 157. I think 149 though. -
Bitterrunner-upBubba Jenkins is ranked at 157 for Arizona State. He's an awesome talent and when he's on he can beat anyone, but last year his match with Taylor was very close, one or two points I think. I have a hard time believing that he has improved at the same rate as David Taylor over the past 12 months. Also, Taylor is likely bigger and stronger than the last time they met with another year of lifting and training under his belt. Finally, when I go back and think about that match (Jenkins/Taylor), I can't get out of my head the fact that in a close match, Jenkins would not choose down on the true freshman. Jenkins was working out with Taylor every day back then, he knew something we don't...If Jenkins (or most other 157s in the country find themselves underneath David Taylor, they're going to get turned.
I think Taylor will have a few losses, maybe even as late as the Big Ten Tourny, but at the NCAAs, I think comes out on top. -
iGranby125: 1: Steiber, 2:McDonough, 3: Precin..... how this weight plays out will have a lot to do with how the brackets ends up, and honestly, i almost wonder if McD will make the weight

141: 1: Russell, 2:Lidsey, 3:Kennedy
149: 1: Dake, 2:Caldwell, 3:Jenkins (if in fact at 149)
157: 1: Sponseller, 2: Taylor, 3:Jenkins (if not at 149)
165: 1: Burroughs, 2: Howe, 3: Miller
174: 1: Lewnes, 2: Reader, 3: Bennet
184: 1: Smith, 2: LeBlanc, 3: Perry
197: 1: Kilgore, 2: Haynes, 3: Simaz
