Watkins Youth Wrestling
2010-2011
Wrestling is as natural as kids rolling around on the living room floor or outside in the grass.
It’s FUN. This is a great opportunity to get youth interested in wrestling. Basic fundamentals
and techniques will be stressed and athletes will be matched up not only by age and size, but by ability.
If you want to learn to wrestle properly and compete, this is the program for you!
WHY WRESTLE?
1. While learning basic skills, the kids will participate in drills and games that will improve their balance, coordination, strength, and agility.
2. Everybody participates 100% of the time in practice. There is a lot of action.
3. Everybody has the opportunity to compete in duals and tournaments.
4. Since wrestling has weight classes, everybody can be successful. One does not have to be big or tall to be competitive.

WRESTLING FACTS
• Wrestling is the sixth most participated in sport in the United States
• Accomplishment in wrestling is often accompanied by high academic achievement
• A wrestling match has the strategy of a game of chess with an unlimited number of constantly changing
possibilities. Technique, balance, speed, and confidence are all just as important as strength
• Wrestling is relatively safe and non-violent. There is no punching, kicking, body slams, head butts, etc.
• Wrestling is both an individual and team sport: There is a direct link between the amount of effort one puts into
wrestling and how successful they are in competition. In a dual match each wrestler has the exact same point
scoring potential for his team.
• Wrestling is perhaps the best sport for overall physical development because it involves all muscle groups, and
requires the greatest balance of athletic skill. Not only does wrestling improve balance, speed, agility and
intensity, but it strengthens virtually all muscle groups from hips, legs, torso, upper body, neck, and
grip strength.
• Sportsmanship is promoted in wrestling in ways that go beyond what other sports practice. Youth wrestlers are
not only required to shake hands before and after competition, but they are expected to shake the hand of their
opponent’s coach, win or lose, as they leave the mat.
• Involvement in wrestling is a great way to build confidence and the ability to defend one’s self, without resorting
to the violent tactics inherent in most other forms of self-defense.
• Nine American presidents wrestled
• Half of the Navy Seals (some of the toughest men in the military) are former wrestlers
