Getting kids out for the team?

  • ksig489
Im putting together a lot of things to use to promote wrestling at our school and to try to get numbers up. I have the usual list of famous people who wrestled, our school's history, quotes about wrestling, posters and so on...

    What do you use?

We use cold, hard cash. If a student has all A's, we give them $50 a week for the remaining weeks of the grading period. As and Bs; $40, just Bs $35 and so on. With the new nine weeks comes reevaluation. We have a complete chart if you'd like to use it.

We get our money from the elementary and junior high kids. This last earthquake in Haiti brought in $427 in three days!!! Gullible little turds!

Let me know if you need more ideas.

A couple others I'll throw out there (in all honesty here) are highlight DVDs (nothing long, just a short 45sec "commercial" for your team), or even doing something... anything with the junior high as a collective or mixed group.

I think this last one is where I could make more strides. We went to two home matches as a team last year. The entire high school team sat near the junior high bench. Every kid received a standing "O" for their effort. After the match, we made sure to get over to the kids a encourage them as best they could.

    ust a couple to try.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA You should have recruited Zach, he could always use some extra money! LOL Seriously, cruiser, you're just rotten sometimes. ;)

Having said that, I think having the varsity team attend a Jr. High meet and cheering them on is an excellent idea. Exxxxcccceellllennnt (in my best Montgomery Burns voice) Great idea!

There are conferences out there that have all scheduled duals/tris with the JH wrestling before the varsity already. I think it's a very good thing.

Have in school matches if you can. Like a 12pm match and invite the entire student body to the match. Some schools here in Florida have done that and I think it has helped peak a bit of interest. Have them see the family the wrestling team is.

One of the most effective ways to build numbers is to have Varsity wrestlers who take the time to talk to, respect, and make feel welcome the younger incoming freshmen and 7th and 8th graders. Nobody wants to come out for a team as a freshmen and be picked on or hazed. If the older kids make the younger kids feels welcome and accepted, it goes a long way.

In the Mid-State League we have tri-meets. On one mat is the varsity and the other mat is the jr. high. This brings a bigger crowd to the meets and lets the jr high team and parents see what they have to look forward to when they get to the varsity. Coach Nace sometimes goes up into the crowd of Vikings and shakes hands and thanks people for coming.

Coach Nace has built a really nice program. I really like the connection he has with his youth wrestlers. I think their parents do too.
